I'm the Squeak Upon the Stair... - a spooky poem

I’M THE SQUEAK UPON THE STAIR...
by
Greg Pincus

I’m the squeak upon the stair...
Yet when you look, there’s no one there.
I’m howling winds, groaning floors,
Extinguished lights, slamming doors.
I’m flitting shadows, darkening skies,
Piercing screams, distant cries.
I’m all your fears – heard, felt, or seen.
I’m in your head. I’m Halloween.

The Poetry Friday Roundup is over at Random Noodling this week. Check it out, if you dare. Spooooooky. And remember, if you end up with any extra of those little Reese's cups this Halloween, I'll gladly help you out with them.

I'm not a Hallo-wiener, Greg, but I love your poem!

Nice one, Greg! I like the way you take the Halloween "standards" and pile them all up--and they don't turn out to be cliches but the concept of Halloween we carry in our heads. Perfect for 3rd-4th grade.

This is awesome! I love how it's all in one's head - which isn't what most people think of when they think of Halloween, but this really works.

I just started a class writing scary stories. Wish I could have had your poem then, but will share it later. Great poem. I like "I'm the squeak upon the stair".

I made the mistake of buying a huge bag of those PB cups a week before Halloween -- at this rate there won't be any left to hand out to Trick Or Treaters.

I can't wait to read your poem to my kids when they get home.

Love love love it -- a fabulously upbeat rhythm to accompany those fears. Somehow makes them easier to bear!

Cute poem. I enjoyed reading it and liked the rhythm and rhyme of it. Good for reading aloud. Perfect ending for discussion with students.
