Rise to the Epic Challenge (This Means War) - an acrostic poem, a battle poem

Rise to the Epic Challenge (This Means War)
by
Greg Pincus

The battle lines are clearly drawn.
How brave we stand. How unafraid.
I know before the next day’s dawn
Sweet songs shall speak of heroes made.
My fellow men are by my side,
Each one but part of our great whole.
A truce we offered up – denied!
Now victory’s our goal.
Sudden cheers! Oh, startling noise!
With tension high, we must begin…
A kickball game! Girls challenge boys.
Rise up! (And please let us boys win.)

The above was my third round entry in Ed DeCaria's March Poetry Madness. My assigned word was "truce" and how I ended up here is truly anyone's guess! I'm still alive and kicking over there with a poem due tomorrow morning in the Final Four. Fun times, and so many amazing poems written by so many. I hope you've been following along!

The Poetry Friday roundup is over at my juicy jittle universe today (well, it's actually Heidi Mordhorst's universe, not mine!). Head on over for more poetry fun.

And if you'd like to get all the poems here at GottaBook - from 30 Poets/30 Days to guest poets, to whatever I cook up - emailed to you for freeee as they hit the blog, enter your email address in the box below then click subscribe!

Seeing Football - a sports poem/a poem about imagination

Seeing Football
by
Greg Pincus

A football game is on TV -
Fans watching, cheering, screaming.
But I’m not tuning in like that:
I’m thinking, drifting, dreaming.

I see myself out on the field
With toughness, savvy, skills.
I’ll take the whole crowd’s breath away…
Cause goose bumps, sore throats, thrills.

I’m linebacker. I’m running back.
I’m safety, tight end, guard.
I play my heart out, fighting for
Each inch, each foot, each yard.

I’m quarterback. I’m cornerback.
I’m center, punter, kicker.
I catch the ball. Defenders chase!
I’m faster, sharper, quicker.

You watch the screen. I’m playing hard.
I’m jumping, diving, scoring!
Compared to what’s inside my head
That TV game is boring.

It's Super Sunday here in the States, so if you, like me, are watching the game, I do hope you enjoy that game and that it's anything but boring!

A Doubleheader Sweep -- a doubleheader poem/a math poem/a concrete poem

It's another concrete poem, but this time I think layout won't be an issue....

Tennis Doubles Trouble -- a tennis poem

TENNIS DOUBLES TROUBLE
by
Gregory K.

My doubles partner’s really bad.
We never win. It makes me mad.
I’d trade him but he’d get so sad.
I really I wish I never had
Teamed for doubles with my dad.

My New Trampoline -- a trampoline poem/ a concrete poem

I believe this is my first attempt at posting original concrete poetry here on the blog (though I've posted a Douglas Florian concrete poem before), so if any of you have huge trouble reading this, I'd appreciate a heads up about browser/net related issues. It looks good on my computer, at least!

The Golf Fib -- a golf poem

The Golf Fib
By
Gregory K.

Drive.
Putt.
That’s it.
Golf’s simple!
The best game by far!
(As long as I’m ignoring “par.”)

Home Run -- a baseball poem

HOME RUN
by
Gregory K.

Swing.
Crack!
Fly ball.
Going deep.
What a sight I see...
Just the back of the left fielder.

Baseball is my favorite sport, it's true. This Fib comes not so much from memory, but from a feeling this scrappy leadoff hitting second baseman wished he had more often!

(I'm posting an original poem-a-day through April in celebration of National Poetry Month. Links to this and other poems here on GottaBook (and there are lots of others, because poetry is NOT just for April) are collected over on the right of the blog under the headline "The Poems".)

Let's Go Play -- a football poem

Yes, more sports poetry in Fib form here on my Poetry Friday entry (this week's links collected by Susan). This time it's football poetry... stemming from my love of a sport I played alllll the time as a kid until everyone suddenly was much, much bigger than me. Line three would be out for me nowadays, but otherwise...

LET'S GO PLAY
by
Gregory K.

Flag.
Touch.
Tackle.
It's all good.
Whatever the name,
It’s football! Let's go play a game!

Getting Ready -- A Hockey Poem

Sports poetry keeps on popping up here at GottaBook, in this case with me adding to the world's collection of hockey poems (in Fib form). What can I say? I love sports almost as much as I love food, so expect to see more poems on both topics as time goes on. You have been warned. Happy Poetry Friday (with links collected at Big A little a)....

GETTING READY
by
Gregory K.

Pads.
Glove.
Face mask.
All I ask...
By all that's holy,
Survive my first game as goalie.

Dunk! -- a basketball poem

A Poetry Friday entry (see collected links over at Chicken Spaghetti) combining a few of my favorite things: sports and Fibs. One of my favorite possessions to this day is my trophy for "most improved player" from a basketball camp I attended in my weeeee youth. If you'd seen the baseline from which I started (and I'm not talking a baseline on the court, but rather my talent level), you'd understand that I had a big advantage when it came to getting a "most improved" trophy. Still, this poem is one that's clearly inspired by my own feelings at the time....

DUNK!
by
Gregory K.

Slam!
Dunk!
Soaring...
I'm scoring.
Crowd keeps on roaring.
In my dreams I'm unstoppable.

GOAL! -- A Soccer Poem

In honor of the World Cup final this weekend (and for Poetry Friday)...

GOAL!
by
Gregory K.

Goal!
Goal!
I scored a goal.
Oh, what a perfect day.
I kicked the ball so hard and true.
Oh, what a perfect play.

Boo?
Boo?
Why would you boo?
This always was my dream:
I shot it past the goalie and...
Oh, he’s on my team.

A baseball Fib...

Baseball is near and dear to my heart, and I think sports Fibbery is still underserved, so I thought I'd toss up a baseball Fib. This is also a tribute to the remarkable weather we've had out here lately. You know, the type of weather where you understand why people settled in the middle of a giant desert....

What?
Done?
No way.
Come on -- stay.
Nothing else will do:
It's a perfect day to play two.

Poem of the Day: I Threw a Baseball

I THREW A BASEBALL
by
Gregory K.

I threw a baseball into the air.
If fell to Earth I know not where.
And so you see, I can't explain
What happened to your window pane.

Poem of the Day: The Biking Blues

THE BIKING BLUES
by
Gregory K.

I wanted to go riding.
It was all my heart desired.
Instead, I’m stuck at home because my bike said, “I’m two tired.”
