Night Write
by
Greg Pincus
Cannot sleep.
Turn on light.
Grab a pen -
Time to write!
Brain's awake.
Words fly fast.
Write and then
Read, at last.
Sometimes words
Come out right.
Sadly, this is not that night.
This was actually a poem started during the writing of The 14 Fibs of Gregory K. Then I thought about similar topics again when I was working on The Homework Strike, but the poem never fit either book. It's possible that it's autobiographical, but I'm not saying :-)
It's Poetry Friday once again! This week, you can check out the roundup of posts over at Keri Recommends. Lots o' good stuff piling up there (read her post and click on the "click this widget" widget to see more!).

Rules of Writing (Part One) - a poem about writing
Rules of Writing (Part One)
by
Greg Pincus
There are many rules of writing,
But here's one that's a myth:
You can never end a sentence
A preposition with.
It's true. I mean, it's true that it's a myth. That's something I'm sure of. I'm also sure it's Poetry Friday here in the blogosphere, and you can check out this week's roundup of posts over at Amy's amazingly awesome Poem Farm.

Almost There.... - a writing poem/a poem poem
Almost There....
by
Greg Pincus
I've been thinking about a new poem.
I can see the way it should begin.
Yet the writing is pending
'Til I know the ending -
I don't want to leave it unfin...!
Happy Summer, y'all (well... y'all in the Northern Hemisphere!). This week's Poetry Friday Roundup is over at The Poem Farm where Amy Ludwig VanDerwater keeps you stocked in poetry all year round.
And if you want to get all the poems hereabouts (and only the poems) emailed to you for freeee as they hit the blog, enter your email address in the box below then click subscribe!

The Grammar Doctor's Diagnosis - a grammar poem/a health poem
The Grammar Doctor’s Diagnosis
by
Greg Pincus
The Grammar Doctor spoke: he said:
“The news is not fantastic.”
My writing diet: it must change:
Turns out: my co:l:on’s: spastic:::!
This poem was inspired by March Poetry Madness at Think Kid, Think (specifically a single word from it used as a prompt!).

I Tried to Write a Poem - a writing poem
I Tried to Write a Poem
by
Greg Pincus
I tried to write a poem.
The words just didn’t flow.
I’d write a few
Then scratch them through
And in the trash they’d go
I gave myself a deadline…
I guess this one I’ll miss.
Time’s come and gone,
Now I’ll move on…
Since all I’ve got is this.
The Poetry Friday roundup is over at Teaching Authors today. Do go check it out (and poke around over there, too).

"Tag, You're It," He Said Poetically - an adverb poem/a dialogue tag poem
"Tag, You're It," He Said Poetically
(a dialogue tag poem)
by
Greg Pincus
"Cut them quickly," she said speedily.
"I want them gone," he said needily.
"Show don't tell," he said directly.
"Use them well," she said correctly.
"I hate adverbs," he said whinily.
"We're all done," she said finally.
It's a little silliness either designed to end your summer or to send you back to school, I type optionally. Regardless, I hope you enjoy!
The Poetry Friday roundup is over at Teach Poetry K-12 today. Why not go check it out?

This Morning I E-mailed My Manuscript Out - a poem for writers
THIS MORNING I E-MAILED MY MANUSCRIPT OUT
by
Gregory K.
This morning, I e-mailed my manuscript out –
Clicked send then I let out a huge, happy shout.
Now that it’s gone, there’s so much I can do:
Like speak to my friends and my family, too!
I’ll do all the dishes. I’ll sweep all the floors.
I’ll visit that place that they call “the outdoors.”
I’ll catch up on reading. A movie sounds good.
I’ll clean off my desktop to check if it’s wood.
I’ll cut back on coffee and eat some real meals.
I’ll see if my legs like how exercise feels.
I do hope I hear ‘bout my manuscript soon,
But I won’t check my inbox... at least until noon.
Elaine has the Poetry Friday Roundup over at the Wild Rose Reader today. It's well worth checking out, as is her blog itself.

The Poet Talks Back -- a poem about writing/a poem about poetry
THE POET TALKS BACK
by
Gregory K.
You tire of my puns and jokes?
My meter makes you groan?
You think my rhymes are over-ripe?
My wordplay makes you moan?
There’s little I can say except it really could be worse…
I could become a backwards bard and only write inverse.
I'm posting an original poem each day in April in celebration of National Poetry Month. Links to this and other poems here on GottaBook (and I post all year round, because poetry is NOT just for April!) are collected over on the right of the blog under the headline "The Poems".

Because you’ll read the ending first,
I wrote all this and then reversed.
